TITLE: How Internet Technology Impacts Today’s Education
Most people see technology as a distraction to students, but is it really a distraction if used properly? Let us take a look.
According to Collins dictionary, technology is the organisation of knowledge for practical purpose and according to British English Dictionary, education is the process of impacting knowledge, skills and judgement.
We can see that there is a keen relationship between education and technology. The question to be asked is how does internet technology impact today’s education?
From my own perspective which I know is a general view, education is not limited to classroom discussions or learning, writing and passing examinations and formal education settings like attending different levels of education like primary, secondary and higher institution of learning.
It is as simple as being informed about happenings all across the world on daily basis. For example, inventions, global events, health, science and technology, among others.
Taking the health sector as an example, daily global news provides current information about the covid-19 pandemic. These pieces of information are available to millions of people all around the world at the same time over various platforms that have been made available through technology.
Furthermore, the use of technology has made it possible for many formal and informal education system and educational materials for personal development available online for anyone interested. Tertiary institutions have online presence for students to gain their degrees from the comfort of their homes at affordable fees compared to the physical school. Educative games makes learning fun, helps students to pay attention and help in their general performance and creativity .
Moreover, technology has reduced primitivity. This is in the sense that there is an advancement from the use of blackboards to white boards and from the use of white boards to
electronic boards and electronic devices which increases the speed of learning and social interaction.
Technology has also made the organisation of online examinations possible and with immediate release of results. Textbooks and various educational materials which are free to download instead of buying big textbooks are made available on the internet which is made possible by technology. In addition, technology has promoted the learning of skills for blue collar jobs such as plumbing, painting, masonry, carpentery and others so much so that these skills can be learnt online.
In conclusion, technology aids knowledge, spreads information faster and is made accessible to a wider range of people without geographical boundaries or formal education setting. Which is an obvious positive impact on today’s education.
