Chemical reactions often involve changes in energy due to the breaking and formation of bonds. Reactions in which energy is released are exothermic reactions, while those that take in heat energy are endothermic. Enthalpy change is the name given to the amount of heat evolved or absorbed in a reaction carried out at constant pressure. At the end of this module, among other things, students will gain very good understanding of energy changes accompanying physical and chemical changes, energy and enthalpy, entropy as an order-disorder phenomenon, and spontaneity of reactions.
