A metal is an element that readily forms positive ions (cations) and has metallic bonds. Metals can be categorised according to their physical or chemical properties. Categories described in the subsections below include ferrous and non-ferrous metals; brittle metals and refractory metals; white metals; heavy and light metals; and base, noble, and precious metals. At the end of this module, among other things, students will gain very good understanding of properties, classification and uses of metals, properties and uses of Sodium and Calcium and their compounds, extraction of metals: Aluminium, Iron and Tin, reactivity of metals with air, water and acids, alloys, and metals of the first transition series.
